Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Boat operators in Bacalar could face fines ranging from 6,000 to 1 million pesos for operating irregularly or violating maritime safety regulations, authorities announced as part of ongoing surveillance operations in southern Quintana Roo.
Port Captain Román Bustos Gómez said the operations focus on detecting vessels without current documentation or irregularities in their certificates, particularly regarding conditions required for navigation under regulations.
The supervision extends to points including Chetumal, Chile Verde, and Bacalar, where registered boat activity is concentrated.
Bustos Gómez explained that approximately 2,000 vessels are registered in the region, with an estimated 10% having outdated documentation while the remaining 90% maintain proper certificates.
He noted this reflects majority compliance, though cases requiring attention persist to avoid risks. The captain clarified that not renewing maritime safety permits doesn’t automatically trigger penalties if the vessel isn’t in operation, but warned that when these units intend to be used, they must regularize their situation before navigating. Otherwise, they could face administrative measures.
Regarding sanctions, he indicated no fines have been imposed this year, though the possibility remains if violations are detected. He recalled that in 2025, authorities did impose sanctions on vessels that failed to comply with regulations, though the number of cases wasn’t detailed.
