Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Maya Train station in Chetumal has recorded a 36 percent increase in passenger numbers during the current holiday period, according to station chief Ángel Rendón Carmona.

The Maya Train has typically experienced low daily ridership, primarily serving some tourists traveling from Chetumal to Cancún, along with business travelers who appreciate the comfort of its spaces for working while in transit.

However, Rendón Carmona stated that during the ongoing year-end holiday season, the Chetumal station has reported a 36 percent rise in passengers, both departing and arriving.

“Normally we have transported 122 local passengers traveling to neighboring municipalities and states. That number has increased to 166 in December, with the municipality of Bacalar in Quintana Roo and Palenque being the most requested destinations in tourist class,” he commented.

In premier class, Bacalar remains the favorite, with 40 daily passengers disembarking at that point, while Playa del Carmen and Cancún also rank among the most popular destinations for tourists and locals.

He detailed the departure schedules from Chetumal Airport: 7:30 a.m. to Palenque, with a transfer in Escárcega; two other routes depart at 9:50 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., both heading to Cancún.

Arrivals include three services: 2:15 p.m. from Cancún, 9:00 p.m. also from Cancún, and 10:57 p.m. from Palenque.

Rendón Carmona reiterated that the Chetumal station maintains active operations with good passenger flow and encouraged Chetumal residents and tourists to take advantage of this opportunity to travel on the Maya Train, which now offers more schedules and greater availability, with occasional promotions such as 2-for-1 tickets during certain periods.
