Progreso, Yucatán — Municipal authorities in Progreso have issued an alert urging beachgoers to exercise caution following the appearance of hazardous marine species along the shoreline. The warning comes during peak summer vacation season, when thousands of visitors flock to the area’s beaches.

Hazardous Marine Life Identified

In recent days, multiple species of fish have washed ashore along both the traditional and international boardwalks. Among the specimens found are fish resembling toadfish and marine catfish, whose spines pose risks to swimmers and pets. Smaller species with venomous barbs have also been documented.

The Progreso City Council, via social media, issued the following directives to residents and tourists:

  • Avoid entering the sea
  • Refrain from approaching or handling stranded animals
  • Prevent children and pets from coming into contact with the specimens
  • Report sightings to the relevant authorities

Ongoing Monitoring and Cleanup Efforts

Personnel from the Animal Control and Protection Unit, led by Geovani Zapata, are maintaining constant surveillance along the coastline. Meanwhile, the Municipal Tourism Directorate has intensified beach-cleaning operations to minimize the risk of contact with the hazardous species.

Authorities also advised beachgoers to tread carefully near the shoreline, as some of these fish may remain hidden in foam or partially buried in the sand with their spines exposed.

Possible Causes Under Investigation

While no official explanation has been provided for the stranding, local fishermen cited potential factors, including:

  • Low oxygen concentrations in the water
  • Shifts in ocean currents
  • Recent temperature drops
  • Unusual wave activity

Some fishermen also raised concerns about red tide, though environmental authorities have not confirmed its presence in Yucatán’s waters. Reports of reddish-brown patches offshore have fueled speculation about harmful algal blooms.

Safety Precautions and Recommendations

The venom from certain species can cause severe pain, swelling, redness, or allergic reactions. In case of a sting, immediate medical attention is advised.

The City Council emphasized that cleanup efforts along both boardwalks will continue to ensure visitor safety during the holiday season.

Key Points:

  • Stranding of Dangerous Species: Progreso authorities confirmed the presence of hazardous fish along the beaches.
  • Cleaning Operations: Municipal teams are working to remove the specimens and mitigate risks.
  • Unconfirmed Red Tide: Fishermen reported discolored patches offshore, but officials have not verified red tide.
  • Public Advisory: Swimmers are urged to avoid the water and report any encounters with the species.
