Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities successfully thwarted a virtual kidnapping attempt in Puerto Aventuras on Tuesday morning after locating two minors unharmed. The incident was reported to emergency services when a distressed mother contacted authorities, alleging that an unknown individual had called her cellphone demanding a large sum of money in exchange for her children’s safety.
Swift Police Response Prevents Extortion Scheme
Officers from the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCM) responded immediately upon receiving the report. The mother, who was waiting on Venado Street, was met by authorities who activated priority response protocols. A search operation was swiftly deployed, leading to the discovery of the minors unharmed.
According to investigators, the children clarified that the situation was a misunderstanding, confirming they had not been kidnapped. The incident was determined to be a fraudulent extortion attempt targeting their mother.
Authorities Urge Vigilance Against Virtual Kidnapping Scams
Following the incident, the SSCM reiterated its call for citizens to report such crimes to emergency services by dialing 911. The family was successfully reunited, and no further threats were reported.
