A video shared on social media exposed the complaint of 40 Argentine tourists who claimed they were surprised with undisclosed charges and a mandatory tip at an establishment in Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres.
The visitors recounted that from their arrival, payment requirements were applied that were not previously mentioned.
The group reported that upon arriving at the establishment, staff assigned them a shaded area without warning them of any additional charges.
Minutes later, they stated, they were demanded minimum consumptions, advance payments, and extra fees for the use of umbrellas.
One of the tourists recalled that they were even told that, for being a large group, they had to cover an additional 15% charge, which caused annoyance and their decision to leave the place.
According to the visitors, these charges were not mentioned before settling them, a situation they interpreted as an attempt at fraud.
“We left because they want to scam us and it’s not good,” expressed one of those affected.
The case adds to similar situations recorded in Mexican Caribbean destinations, particularly in Tulum, where travelers have pointed out high minimum consumptions, unclear rates, and forced tips.
So far, municipal authorities have not revealed the name of the establishment reported by the Argentine tourists.
Business owners and users have insisted on reinforcing surveillance and regulation in tourist areas to avoid situations that affect travelers’ experiences and the reputation of destinations with high international influx.
