Puerto Morelos, Mexico — A total of 150 farmers in Leona Vicario received one ton of corn seeds as part of a joint initiative between municipal and state authorities to strengthen agricultural production in Puerto Morelos. The effort was coordinated by Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz and implemented through the municipal offices of Economic Development and Agricultural Promotion, in collaboration with Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (Sedarpe).
Strengthening Local Agriculture
Ignacio Sánchez Herrera, representing Manuel Jesús Góngora Sansores, the municipal coordinator of Agricultural and Fisheries Promotion, emphasized the significance of the seed distribution in improving crop yields and supporting local farmers.
“With these seeds, we will enhance planting and the final product. We are encouraging our producers to achieve food self-sufficiency and strengthen the economic stability of rural families,” Sánchez Herrera stated during the distribution event.
Under the current administration, more than two tons of seeds—including jamapa beans and vegetables such as radish, cilantro, squash, and cucumber—have already been distributed. These efforts have benefited over 150 farmers across communities like Leona Vicario, Central Vallarta, Delirios, and the Agricultural Zone.
Economic Growth Through Local Production
Sánchez Herrera highlighted the broader economic impact of the initiative, stating, “We are working to increase food production in each locality, which will help create jobs and, in turn, generate greater economic stability.”
The event was attended by Juan Carlos Vega Benítez, Director General of Economic Development, and David Medina Patrón, Director of Agricultural and Community Development at Sedarpe, along with other officials involved in supporting Puerto Morelos’ agricultural sector.
