Aerus Airlines Introduces New Route to Cozumel Airport

Aerus Airlines has announced a new air route between Cancun and Cozumel, set to commence in May.

The addition of Aerus Airlines to Cozumel will boost the island's connectivity, with operations starting on May 13. The airline will offer 12 daily flights between Cancun and the island, enhancing the influx of passengers to Cozumel.

During a press conference, Aerus Airlines revealed that Quintana Roo received more than 33.667 million tourists in 2023, with 21 million choosing to stay overnight in the state, and one million in Cozumel. This resulted in an economic boost of over $900 million for the island last year, marking a 3% increase from the previous year.

Cozumel, also known as the Island of the Swallows, boasts 4,952 hotel rooms with an average annual occupancy rate of over 65% last year, surpassing the national average.

In terms of economic impact, the island surpassed the previous year's figures by over $75 million in January alone. As for air travel activity in January 2024, flight arrivals also increased from 60,000 to 77,000 passengers.

Javier Herrera García, General Director of Aerus, noted that in May 2022, the airline received a 10-year concession from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency to operate scheduled flights.

The new air route in Quintana Roo will kick off on May 13 with 12 daily 35-minute flights between Cancun and Cozumel. The airline will also offer daily flights from Cancun to Merida, Cozumel to Chichen Itza, and three weekly flights between Cancun and Chetumal.
