Adopt, Don’t Abuse: Playa del Carmen Cracks Down on Cruelty

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Following recent cases of animal abuse in Playa del Carmen, Cristina Torres Gómez, Secretary of Government, urged residents to consider pet adoption instead of mistreatment, emphasizing that such acts are punishable by law.

Government Takes Firm Stance Against Animal Cruelty

In the past year, multiple individuals have been detained and even charged for animal abuse, primarily involving dogs. Torres Gómez stated that Quintana Roo has sufficient legal mechanisms to address these cases and warned against actions that could lead to imprisonment.

“We will act with the full force of the law. We have the legal framework to punish those responsible. In Playa del Carmen, several cases of animal abuse have already been prosecuted, and we will continue to do so. The message is clear: if you have a pet, care for it. If you cannot, put it up for adoption. These are living beings that deserve our protection,” said Torres Gómez.

Disturbing Cases of Abuse

The municipality has witnessed brutal cases of animal mistreatment, including burns, beatings causing severe injuries, and even fatal attacks. Recently, an individual was arrested, charged, and jailed for killing a dog with a sharp weapon in the Nicte-ha neighborhood.

“We will continue applying the full weight of the law against those who commit these atrocious acts,” the official warned.

The Quintana Roo Penal Code imposes fines and prison sentences of up to six years for extreme cases of animal cruelty, particularly when an animal’s life is taken through violent means. Even minor injuries to animals are punishable offenses.

“We deeply regret and condemn these actions. Several cases have already been prosecuted, and we will not stop pursuing justice,” concluded the Secretary of Government.
