The Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres, under the leadership of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, is committed to maintaining clean and orderly beaches. To achieve this, the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) of Isla Mujeres is working diligently to ensure the beaches remain in peak condition.

As the current municipal administration nears its end, the Blue Flag distinction has been renewed for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award applies to the popular Playa Centro and Playa Norte in the Insular Zone. This recognition reflects the continuous efforts to uphold high standards in Isla Mujeres, a globally renowned sun and beach destination in the Mexican Caribbean.

Dayana Alejandra Pérez Medina, the Director of Zofemat Isla Mujeres, shared that a team of 121 staff members carry out cleaning duties on the beach areas from 5:00 to 10:00 a.m. They also keep active guard shifts from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. During vacation periods, these hours are extended from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to reinforce cleanliness, making the beaches look pristine and well-kept.

The Blue Flag is an international recognition given to beaches that meet high standards in water quality, environmental management and education, safety, and services. This award ensures that visitors to these beaches will have a unique and memorable experience.
