Cancún Airport Protest: Transporters vs. Ride-Apps

Cancún, Mexico — Tourist service operators and providers staged a protest this morning against platforms such as Uber, DiDi, and InDrive, denouncing that over 100 of these vehicles enter the Cancún International Airport daily, which has reduced their activities at the terminal by more than 50 percent.

The protesters began their demonstration in front of the headquarters of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT). Subsequently, they proceeded in a caravan toward the airport, driving at low speed along Avenida Tulum.

The caravan of these transporters caused intense vehicular traffic on Bulevar Luis Donaldo Colosio for approximately one hour. During this period, the Traffic Directorate implemented a traffic operation to prevent further disruptions in the area of the route.

During the protest, the demonstrators stated that the arrival of this type of service to the region has caused their economic losses to amount to 70 percent per unit. They emphasized that the situation has worsened in recent months, as they cannot compete on equal terms with the operators of these platforms.

In this regard, the protesters demanded greater control over access to the airport. They also requested that drivers for the platforms be subject to the same operating guidelines and taxes as concessionary service transporters.

The demonstrators warned that if they do not receive a prompt response from authorities at all three levels of government, they will carry out further mobilizations in the city until all their problems are heard and addressed.
