Cozumel's Animal Control Center has introduced a unique home service for the free sterilization of dogs and cats, including both pets and stray animals. This initiative aims to control the growing population of stray animals on the island.
Juan Antonio Dzul Cámara, the Health Director of the Cozumel City Council, stated that the primary goal of this program is to manage the reproduction of domestic and stray dogs and cats. On July 10 and 11 alone, 19 dogs and 14 cats were sterilized in the Caribe subdivision.
The program has gradually expanded over the last two months of 2023, earning recognition within the Cozumel community. Throughout 2023, the Animal Control Center performed a total of 559 sterilizations, including 335 dogs and 224 cats.
The home service process is straightforward. Community members can schedule an appointment through the Animal Control Center's social media channels. On the day of the sterilization, the team arrives with vans and carriers to transport the animals to the surgery site. By 2 pm, the animals are returned to their original location, as explained by Dzul Cámara.
To utilize this service, community members must gather between eight and ten dogs and a similar number of cats. This requirement is crucial for the efficient operation of the program.
