Cancún, Mexico — A violent attack in Cancún has resulted in three fatalities and one person injured, marking another violent incident in the tourist destination. The event occurred in the La Joya subdivision, located in Supermanzana 254 of the Benito Juárez municipality.
According to reports, the incident took place on the night of Sunday, September 21. Three individuals were outside a residence on Murano street in the mentioned subdivision at approximately 10:00 pm when armed individuals arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at point-blank range before fleeing to an unknown location.
Following the sound of gunshots, residents of La Joya de Cancún called the 911 emergency number, requesting the presence of authorities in Supermanzana 254. Municipal police and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered two men deceased and two injured individuals—one man and one woman. The injured were transported to the General Hospital "Jesús Kumate." However, hours later, the woman's death was confirmed. The man remains injured and in delicate condition.
The victims were identified as Pedro Alberto, 40; Miguel, 44; and Azucena, 53, who died on Monday. According to initial investigations, the case could be related to drug retail sales.
More Violence in the Tourist Destination
Violence was once again present in Cancún after a shooting targeted the headquarters of the Leona Vicario taxi union, located in Supermanzana 70. The cause of the attack is still unknown.
The events occurred on the morning of Sunday, September 21. According to reports, there were no injuries. Shortly before 12:00 pm, a report was made to the 911 emergency line stating that gunshots had been heard on 16th street, corner with 41st, just a few meters from José López Portillo avenue in Supermanzana 70 of Cancún.
According to some accounts from local residents, individuals on a motorcycle arrived at the Leona Vicario taxi union base and fired repeatedly. They subsequently fled to an unknown location.
After the report was made, Cancún municipal police arrived as first responders, followed shortly by elements of the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office, who began investigations and collected spent shell casings. Paramedics arrived at the site but confirmed there were no injured persons and left the location.
The cause of this new armed attack in Cancún is still unknown, but it is believed it could be due to extortion for "protection" money. No line of investigation has been ruled out at this time.
