Librobus Brings Books to Quintana Roo Communities

A mobile library truck is parked with open shelves displaying books and a sign for a reading initiative. Two individuals are interacting at the counter.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Librobus is now in Quintana Roo and will tour 10 of the state’s 11 municipalities, with the exception of Cozumel. Its journey began on September 9 and will conclude on September 28, as announced at the State Meeting of Reading Clubs.

This mobile bookstore, which just finished a tour of Campeche, carries more than 2,000 works, including books on the dissemination of science, the dissemination of history, children’s books, and classics. The goal is to take books out of large cities and bring them closer to communities, to the most remote points of the country, which is why the Librobuses—eight in total—were implemented and are touring different parts of the national territory.

“It will be until September 28 touring almost all the municipalities and will be in areas where libraries do not reach, such as the communities of Carrillo Puerto and Tulum. It has already been in Solferino, in Lázaro Cárdenas, and it will pass through Bacalar, through Mahahual, and will reach the state capital, there on the border with Belize, and will be in the Andrés Quintana Roo park… starting this weekend at the 100 tianguis and Las Palapas park in Cancún,” shared Lilian Villanueva, director of the Institute of Culture and Arts of Quintana Roo.

Any art, she emphasized, begins with letters, and for anything in life, one picks up a pencil and writes, which is why the book is so important. In this Librobus, one can find everything from great classics for nine pesos to books that cost around 200 pesos.

“So they can buy the book they want and have it at home, start them, let them call… preferably that a child comes across a book in the house and picks it up rather than coming across maybe an iPad or a phone or some device that we don’t want them to have in their hand all day,” pointed out the official.

She invited young people to take advantage of this great public policy of the culture of peace and to say yes to reading, to the arts, and to enabled and illuminated public spaces, and to visit this Librobus, whose route will be disseminated through the social media channels of the Institute of Culture and Arts
