Cancún, Mexico — Local authorities anticipate crowds of up to 33,000 people will gather at La Reforma Plaza in front of the Cancún city hall for the Independence Day celebrations on September 15 and 16.

Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, the Secretary General of the Benito Juárez City Council, stated that for the night of September 15 alone, they expect up to 25,000 attendees.

“For September 15, we are expecting between 20,000 and 25,000 attendees, and there will be a significant operation to guarantee the safety of those who join us that day,” Gutiérrez Fernández said. “It will be led by the Benito Juárez Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the state Secretariat of Security and federal forces, such as the National Guard, the Navy, and the Army (Sedena).”

He added that personnel from the Fire Department, Civil Protection, and various other municipal government areas will also participate to ensure order and security for all attendees at the event.

For the civic-military parade on September 16, the official commented that the municipal government expects between 7,000 and 8,000 attendees.

Gutiérrez Fernández noted that in previous years, the patriotic celebrations held at the City Hall have concluded without any major incidents, and they expect this edition to be the same.

For the September 15 celebrations, municipal authorities granted 54 permits for selling food and setting up games around the City Hall, according to José Gamaliel Canto Cambranis, the Director of Commerce and Services in Public Thoroughfares for the municipality of Benito Juárez.

“On September 15, which is the ‘Cry of Dolores’ day, we already have permits to have a gastronomic corridor in front of the City Hall,” Canto Cambranis said. “As of today, we have granted 42 permits exclusively for food vendors, particularly for typical foods and snacks.”

Furthermore, a mini-fair with inflatable games, marble games, lottery, and other emblematic festival games will be installed in the lateral part of the City Hall, near the parking area, for which 12 authorizations were granted.

These permits are in addition to the 22 that were issued to those selling patriotic-themed merchandise, such as flags, hats, horns, and other products linked to the national holidays, the official added.

Canto Cambranis commented that, so far, a couple of street vendors were found selling patriotic merchandise without authorization from the local government. They were sanctioned with an administrative citation and a fine ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 pesos.
