Cancún — With the goal of consolidating Cancún as a more sustainable tourist destination, the organization Sustentur has launched the "Zero Waste, Zero Garbage" project in collaboration with the TUIcare Foundation. The initiative involves a planned investment of 10 million pesos over three years, according to Vicente Ferreyra, a representative of Sustentur.

A Pioneering Project in Quintana Roo

Ferreyra highlighted that this is a pioneering project in Quintana Roo that seeks to lay the groundwork for better waste management in the tourism sector while simultaneously promoting the creation of more sustainable value chains.

According to the plan, by the end of 2025, updated information on waste management will be available to serve as a basis for defining future actions and strengthening local businesses dedicated to the recycling of plastics and glass.

Bipartite Financing Scheme

The financing scheme stipulates that half of the resources will be contributed by the TUIcare Foundation, while the other half will be obtained through public funds, the participation of hotels, and partnerships with various sector stakeholders.

"We have already started the project with a first part of the investment; the idea is that over the next three years we manage to channel the 10 million pesos to promote innovative solutions in Cancún and the state," explained Ferreyra.

The initiative aims not only to reduce the environmental impact of tourism but also to open up business opportunities for local companies that invest in the circular economy.
