Tulum, Mexico — Marco Esteban Carrillo Figueroa, alias “La Rata Carrillo” and nephew of the late Amado Carrillo Fuentes, known as “El Señor de los Cielos” (Lord of the Skies), was arrested on September 8 in this tourist destination alongside another individual from Sinaloa. Both were carrying false identification and doses of cocaine ready for distribution.

The arrest revealed that Carrillo Figueroa is the son of Lapa Carrillo, a brother of the deceased leader of the Juárez Cartel. Marco Esteban had previously appeared in videos on social media posing as a hitman for the Sinaloa Cartel. A cousin who had publicly denounced him was executed months later in Culiacán.

The capture in the heart of Tulum's tourist zone has once again placed the Mexican Caribbean in the spotlight as a territory for narcotics trafficking operations, where national-level criminal organizations converge.

Following his transfer to a detention center in Playa del Carmen, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) executed an arrest warrant against him and sent him to Sinaloa, where he will face federal charges.

Maxiproceso

In the so-called "Maxiproceso" against the Juárez Cartel in the late 1990s, the "Señor de los Cielos" was linked to officials from the then-Attorney General's Office (PGR) and the Government of Quintana Roo.
