CHETUMAL — At least five individuals were deprived of their liberty at the Luna Caribe Hotel in the capital of Quintana Roo, after an armed group operating in the southern part of the state allegedly broke into the lodging center.
According to unofficial reports, the number of missing could be higher, potentially rising to eleven people following a series of abductions registered in recent days in the state capital.
The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) reported on September 9 the disappearance of five men in incidents that occurred at different points in Chetumal.
The victims have been identified as Alexis Augusto Ibarra Cornejo, 20; Jack Iván Barra Mendoza, 45; Juan Antonio Ríos Quiroz, 40; Veiko de Jesús Ruíz Verdín, 29; and César Augusto Ahumada Montes, 43. All were last seen on September 3, the same day the attack on the hotel occurred.
It is important to mention that earlier in the week, a man was kidnapped on a main avenue of the city while traveling with his wife. He later appeared alive, although the authorities have not informed the public of the circumstances surrounding his release.
Despite the magnitude of the events, no special search operations or visible actions to locate those responsible have been deployed thus far. Both the Attorney General's Office and the Secretariat of Citizen Security have not released information about these events, which has generated anger among the families of the disappeared, who are decrying the lack of an immediate response.
