Cancún, Quintana Roo — Following a request from the Animal Welfare Network to the state's XVIII Legislature to suspend the use of explosive fireworks during patriotic holidays in Cancún, the Animal Protection Society has now launched a formal proposal. The initiative includes sanctions of up to 30,000 pesos for individuals who use fireworks.

Sara Eugenia Rincón Gallardo, president of the "Luum Balicheo" Animal Protection Society, stated that it is time to stop these types of practices. Consequently, a proposal for high sanctions has been submitted to the Congress to deter the use of pyrotechnics, which endangers the lives of humans and animals.

She explained that the sanctions should be above 30,000 pesos or could even include jail time, as it is a dangerous practice that can be avoided during celebrations this month, specifically the patriotic holidays.

"All of this is being reviewed in the legislature of the Congress of the State of Quintana Roo, so I hope that the initiative is approved, not only for the animals; we must be conscious that uses and customs are things that we must see are not very accepted in these times," the interviewee stated.

The animal rights advocate said that fireworks harm babies, children with autism, the elderly, people with degenerative diseases, birds, and any type of animal that inhabits our jungle, in addition to causing fires.

Rincón Gallardo emphasized that it is time for authorities and legislators to work on prohibiting fireworks, as they represent a tremendous danger and are an industry that has claimed lives.

Fireworks also generate an environmental impact due to the air and noise pollution that affects air quality. Alternatives such as drone shows, mapping, or light displays can be used during the celebration of the Independence Day "Grito" and other patriotic festivities.
