Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Bepensa Foundation, in alliance with Dunosusa, has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the natural resources of the Yucatán Peninsula by announcing the continuation of its "Cenote Cleanup" program. The initiative will see a new intervention at the Tunich cenote, located in Cancún's Region 100.
This action marks a significant milestone for the organization, bringing its total to 71 cenotes sanitized over the past decade. These efforts have prevented more than 32,000 kilograms of waste from contaminating these vital water sources.
A Constant Effort in Sanitation
During a press conference, Fernando Ponce Díaz, President of the Foundation, emphasized that cenotes represent a unique and essential wealth for the ecological balance of the region. He stated that sanitation is just one part of a comprehensive effort that involves both the community and strategic allies.
A new sanitation day is scheduled for September 11 at the Tunich cenote. Protective measures, including the installation of a perimeter wall and mesh fencing, will be implemented to prevent further waste dumping. Additionally, local residents, volunteers, and specialized divers will participate in the cleanup and underwater recovery operations.
Allies and Community Working Together
The support of Dunosusa, facilitated through its rounding-up donation program, has been key to financing these actions. This partnership has enabled the reinforcement of cenote protection with preventive infrastructure and the active participation of citizens.
Ponce Díaz underscored that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility and called on the population to maintain responsible practices. This, he stated, is essential to ensure the cenotes remain a source of life for future generations.
A Legacy of Sustainability
Since its creation in 2005, the Bepensa Foundation has promoted programs in health, environment, and social development. Through this project, it reiterates that the protection of the cenotes is also the protection of life on the peninsula, thereby consolidating a legacy of sustainability that unites companies, communities, and civil society.
