Cozumel, Mexico — Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez has announced that actress and singer Maribel Guardia will be the featured artist for the night of the "Grito de Independencia" in Cozumel. The announcement was made during the presentation of a full program of cultural, civic, and sporting activities scheduled throughout September.
The festivities for the 215th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence formally commenced with the coronation of María José Salazar Hau as the 2025 Ambassador of Independence and the lighting of patriotic lights at the municipal palace and along the main avenues of Cozumel.
The official program was presented on Sunday, September 7. The lighting of the Patriotic Lights serves as a tribute to the heroes and heroines who fought for Mexico’s independence and brought the light of freedom. The illumination and coronation ceremony was led by Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez and the honorary president of DIF Cozumel, Diana Sosa Blanco. They thanked the 2024 Ambassador, Sofía Isabel Herrera Noh, for her service during the final presentation held at Quintana Roo Park.
The inaugural night featured performances by singers Eva Silva and Lulú Rodríguez, who performed traditional Mexican folk music, and the folk musical ensemble Viva México, which presented representative dances from various states across the Mexican Republic.
Following the traditional "Grito de Independencia" ceremony from the Municipal Palace, the main entertainment event will be the performance by Maribel Guardia. The celebrations will also include mechanical rides and a fair adjacent to Quintana Roo Park.
Regarding security for the mass events, the mayor confirmed that a reactionary operational plan is in place to guarantee the safety and integrity of Cozumel residents and visitors participating in the scheduled activities.
