QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — In the Maya communities of Quintana Roo, where access to medical services is limited, the ancestral knowledge of midwives continues to be an essential resource for the care of pregnant women. Since this year, the association Vifac has been driving a project to document their traditional practices across 80 communities in the municipality, a project that could extend through the first quarter of 2026.

Wisdom Passed Down Through Generations

The midwives not only assist births but also preserve techniques of support and inherited care, which makes them central figures in community health. However, they face challenges such as a lack of medical tools and access to specialized studies—like ultrasounds—that allow for the prevention of complications.

“They know, for example, if a baby is coming breech or feet first, and that is already a great help, but it is also important to bring labs and studies closer to the mothers,” explained Citlali Hernández, director of Vifac in Quintana Roo.

A Profession Present in Every Community

During her tour of communities such as Dzulá, Santa Amalia, Señor, and San Francisco Aké, Hernández found at least one midwife per town, and in some cases up to two. The majority communicate in the Maya language, which is why the project includes the support of translators.

Challenges and Opportunities to Strengthen Their Work

Although the midwives possess the ability to recognize signals from the body that often go unnoticed by modern medicine, their work requires strengthening with training, support, adequate equipment, and a closer link with the formal health system.

“The midwives represent a valuable community resource that can be strengthened with support and tools,” Hernández stated.
