Cozumel — The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) has issued a call for local visual artists to join the collective exhibition for the Day of the Dead, which this year will be dedicated to alebrijes, emblematic figures of Mexican folk art that have become a symbol of this celebration.

The exhibition marks its 11th year and in 2025 will pay homage to the alebrijes, fantastic creatures that unite folk art with the tradition of the Day of the Dead.

The FPMC’s general director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, explained that the purpose of this exhibition is to rescue and disseminate Mexican traditions, in addition to strengthening culture and art within the community. She highlighted that it is a space where Cozumel’s creators can share their talent with visitors and inhabitants of the island, in line with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The alebrijes, the protagonists of this edition, emerged in the 1940s thanks to artisan Pedro Linares, who created them from a dream in which fantastic creatures with hybrid forms and vibrant colors appeared. Over time, these pieces acquired a place in the Day of the Dead tradition by being considered representations of spiritual guides that accompany souls on their return to the earthly world.

Isela Carrillo Cupul, director of the Museum of the Island, detailed that works of sculpture, painting, drawing, or photography may be submitted. The artworks must be delivered on stretcher or paper, properly framed, and must not exceed 70 centimeters in width or length. Each artist may submit a single work, accompanied by a card that includes the title, technique, and the author's name. If the work is for sale, the price must be indicated.

The works will be received at the Museum of the Island from October 15 to October 21 on business days and hours. The exhibition will open on October 25 as part of the cultural activities framing the commemoration of the Day of the Dead in Cozumel.
