Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Municipal authorities, under the leadership of Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio, have issued a temporary closure of the famed Coco Bongo nightclub due to a lack of proper operating documentation.
The action was taken during a routine inspection conducted by authorities over the weekend, which verified that the renowned nightlife venue, one of the most famous in the Riviera Maya, did not have all its paperwork in order. Officials from the Playa del Carmen Directorate of Fiscalization and Collection arrived at the establishment and, after their inspection, decided to place closure seals on two of the venue's bars.
According to reports, the operation drew the attention of both clients and staff as it occurred during business hours. The officials, however, made it clear that no one is above the law in Playa del Carmen.
The temporary closure has garnered significant attention from tourists, business owners, and the general public. The issue divided opinions between those who agree that rules must be followed and those who argued that the city's nightlife would be negatively affected.
It was explained that the Coco Bongo company has a few days to present the corresponding documentation. Upon doing so, the temporary closure imposed by the Playa del Carmen authorities would be lifted.
With the temporary shutdown of one of the Riviera Maya's most popular clubs, the municipality of Playa del Carmen has made it clear that it is working to ensure all businesses and citizens respect the law. Officials reiterated that no one is above it.
