Isla Mujeres, Mexico — In a historic event for the island community, the Isla Mujeres City Council approved the handover of a plot of land under a lease agreement to the Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (CAPA) for the construction of the first potable water desalination plant in the island zone of the municipality.

The XXV Ordinary Session of the City Council was led by Municipal President Atenea Ricalde, accompanied by council members José Inés Aguilar Rodríguez, Isla del Mar Magaña López, Bella Mar Garrido Gómez, Imperia Opalina Flores González, Jesús Orlando Silva Koh, and Margarita Concepción Briceño Magaña, among others.

The plant will be constructed and operated by Aguakan, with an investment exceeding 33 million pesos. It will incorporate reverse osmosis technology to produce safe, clean water, with an initial capacity of 15 liters per second, deemed sufficient to supply both the local population and visitors.

The facility will be built in the Mundaca subdivision, on the site currently occupied by the Potable Water Pumping Station #4. It will include extraction systems, filtration, pre-treatment, and automated equipment, as well as a backup power plant to guarantee supply even during emergencies or phenomena such as hurricanes.

With a scalable design that will allow for a future capacity of up to 60 liters per second, this infrastructure will reduce dependence on the submarine pipeline that currently supplies the island and will respond to growing tourist demand.

According to authorities, the project is strategic and sustainable, as it not only strengthens the growth of Isla Mujeres but also ensures a reliable water supply for future generations. With this initiative, Aguakan and the City Council reaffirm their commitment to investing in modern technology to guarantee the right to access quality potable water.
