Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A tragic accident on Saturday night claimed the lives of a family of four on Federal Highway 307, on the Bacalar–Buena Vista stretch. The family was returning to Chetumal after spending the day in Mahahual when a vehicle invaded their lane and struck them head-on around 20:00 hours near the Buena Vista junction.
According to initial reports, a red FIAT Flashback with Quintana Roo license plates, allegedly driven by an intoxicated man, attempted to pass without caution and crashed into a Nissan Versa with Yucatán plates. Following the collision, the Versa left the roadway and immediately caught fire, trapping all four occupants inside.
Firefighters from Bacalar and emergency crews responded quickly, but the flames had already consumed the vehicle. The victims were unofficially identified as José Daniel M. E., 38; Rosa del Carmen A. M.; Jhonathan M. A., 21; and Catharine M. A., 12.
The driver of the FIAT survived and was detained under suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
The National Guard (Highway Division), the Rural Police, agents of Investigation, and experts from the State Attorney General's Office intervened at the scene. They ordered the transfer of the bodies to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) for the legally required autopsy. Both vehicles were taken to a private impound lot for the corresponding procedures.
The incident has shocked the region and reignited concerns over accidents on the federal highway. On social media, relatives and friends of the family expressed their sorrow over the tragic accident.
