Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Councilman Juan Novelo has demanded immediate action to halt the illegal sale of undeveloped land lacking basic services or legal certainty in the municipality of Solidaridad. He warned that these practices ultimately create social problems and place undue burdens on local government.

Unregulated Sales Exploit Vulnerable Buyers

During a City Council session, Novelo criticized opportunistic sellers who profit from selling unregulated parcels of land. "The issue involves profiteers selling plots of land. When it comes to developers, there are people marketing properties without services, without subdivisions, without anything—and they offer them to buyers for 200,000 or 300,000 pesos. Then they say, ‘May God bless you,’ and in the end, the government is left holding the bag," he stated.

Novelo emphasized that the illegal sale of properties has proliferated on social media platforms, with authorities failing to take decisive action. "These sellers aren’t even the legal owners—they’re simply selling possession of land without any connection to the rightful proprietors," he added.

Urgent Need for Regulatory Measures

The councilman insisted that the issue must be addressed urgently to prevent the government from bearing the responsibility of regularization and service provision. He called for discussions to establish mechanisms that would curb these exploitative practices.

Novelo’s remarks come amid growing concerns over unregulated urban expansion in Playa del Carmen, where rapid development has often outpaced infrastructure and legal oversight.
