Holbox, Quintana Roo — The island of Holbox has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first destination in Quintana Roo to receive the international Queer Destination certification. This recognition underscores the island’s commitment to inclusivity and hospitality toward the LGBTQ+ community, positioning it as a leader in inclusive tourism within the Mexican Caribbean.
Training, Awareness, and Respect
To qualify for the certification, destinations must meet five key requirements, with staff training and awareness being among the most critical. Holbox has already certified 580 employees across hotels, restaurants, and ferry services, ensuring they provide a discrimination-free and safe experience for all visitors, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Beyond enhancing traveler experiences, the certification is expected to boost the island’s social and economic landscape by attracting a high-spending demographic. On average, LGBTQ+ tourists in Mexico spend approximately $300 per day.
Expansion of the Certification Across the Mexican Caribbean
Following Holbox’s achievement, Isla Mujeres is now working toward obtaining the same certification, with Playa del Carmen and Tulum expected to follow. The goal is to solidify the Mexican Caribbean as a welcoming and secure region for LGBTQ+ tourism.
Globally, LGBTQ+ tourism generates $4.7 trillion annually, accounting for 10% of international travelers and growing at a faster rate than traditional tourism. Unlike countries such as the U.S. and Argentina, where restrictive policies impact transgender individuals, Mexico is emerging as a more open and inclusive alternative for this market.
Opportunity for the Entire Tourism Sector
The Queer Destination certification is also available to businesses within the tourism industry, including hotels, airlines, and car rental agencies, ensuring inclusivity across the entire value chain. The certification costs between 200,000 and 250,000 pesos per destination and requires collaboration between local authorities and service providers.
With this initiative, Holbox is not only reinforcing its reputation as a natural paradise but also establishing itself as a model for tourism rooted in respect, equity, and diversity.
