Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Municipal President Atenea Gómez Ricalde has publicly recognized the efforts of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) personnel in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of Isla Mujeres' beaches. During an inspection tour, Gómez emphasized the importance of preserving Playa Norte and Playa Centro, both of which hold international certifications for their environmental and recreational quality.
A Model of Clean Beaches
Gómez personally visited Zofemat staff to assess the condition of the municipality’s beaches, praising their daily work in keeping the shores clean, safe, orderly, and free of sargassum. She highlighted that their dedication is crucial to sustaining the natural appeal of the destination and bolstering tourism, a key economic driver for local families.
Internationally Recognized Shores
The mayor underscored the ongoing priority of beach conservation in her administration. Playa Norte and Playa Centro have earned the prestigious Blue Flag certification and the Platinum Beach distinction, affirming their high standards of environmental management. Additionally, Playa Norte has been ranked among the world’s best beaches by TripAdvisor, further cementing Isla Mujeres’ reputation as a world-class tourist destination.
Commitment to Staff and Environmental Stewardship
Gómez reiterated her administration’s dedication to improving working conditions for Zofemat employees while enhancing cleanup efforts, sargassum removal, and general coastal maintenance. She called on both residents and visitors to contribute to beach preservation, stressing that maintaining these spaces is a shared responsibility.
