Isla Aguada, Campeche — Isla Aguada, located in the municipality of Carmen, Campeche, was designated a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) in 2020 for its natural beauty, history, and traditions. This corner of southeastern Mexico has recently gained international recognition after being included in the list of the 54 most beautiful towns in the world by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), thanks to its commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism.

A Unique Destination for Dolphin Sightings

Nestled between the Laguna de Términos and the Gulf of Mexico, this picturesque village is particularly famous for offering sightings of bottlenose dolphins in the wild. Tourist boats provide excursions where visitors can observe these marine mammals in their natural habitat—an experience that attracts both domestic and international tourists year-round.

Why Isla Aguada Stands Out

Beyond dolphin watching, Isla Aguada boasts attractions such as crystal-clear waters, tranquil beaches, and cultural landmarks like its historic lighthouse, now converted into a community museum. The town is also renowned for its seafood cuisine, including the iconic Pan de Cazón (shark sandwich) and fresh ceviche. Its refreshing waters and tropical climate make it an ideal summer getaway.

The town’s proximity to the Laguna de Términos Biosphere Reserve—one of Mexico’s most important biodiversity hotspots—further enhances its appeal. UN Tourism praised Isla Aguada for successfully balancing environmental conservation with sustainable tourism development.

“It is an example of how tourism can benefit local communities without sacrificing their environmental heritage,” representatives of the organization stated in a June 2025 press release.

A Model of Sustainable Tourism

While other destinations like Candelaria or Ciudad del Carmen attract visitors for different reasons, Isla Aguada has positioned itself as Campeche’s premier Pueblo Mágico for ecotourism. Its modest yet welcoming tourist infrastructure allows for a more intimate connection with nature.

With its natural charm, biodiversity, and community-driven conservation efforts, Isla Aguada is not only a standout tourist destination in Campeche but also an inspiring model for other towns seeking harmonious and environmentally respectful tourism development.
