Taxi Union Leader Shot Dead in Playa del Carmen

A white car parked beside a wooden gate and a concrete wall, with the driver's side door open, set in a grassy area.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Abel "N," a 37-year-old delegate of the "Lázaro Cárdenas del Río" Taxi Union, was shot and killed this afternoon inside a vehicle in the informal settlement of Nueva Esperanza. The attack occurred around 5 p.m. as the victim arrived at his residence in patrol car number 20, located on Bahía de Corea Avenue behind the In House neighborhood.

Possible Motive: Settling of Scores

Preliminary investigations suggest the murder may have been motivated by a settling of scores. Authorities received reports of approximately ten gunshots, prompting immediate response from Municipal Preventive Police officers. A search operation was launched to locate the suspects, though no arrests have been reported at this time.

Abel "N" had served as a union delegate in Puerto Aventuras and previously in the Quinta Avenida area. Personnel from the State Attorney General's Office took charge of the crime scene, conducting necessary procedures before transferring the body to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for an autopsy.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in the region, where targeted violence against union representatives and transport workers has been reported in the past. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.
