Quintana Roo, Mexico — The National Electoral Institute (INE) has issued a public notice urging 98,531 citizens in Quintana Roo to renew their voter identification cards, which are set to lose validity. Sergio Bernal Rojas, the executive director of the INE’s Local Board in the state, confirmed that 34,280 of these credentials were valid through 2024.
Credentials Expired After June 2
Although these IDs could still be used during the extraordinary electoral process, an agreement by the INE’s General Council stipulated that they would no longer be valid after June 2—one day after the federal and local judicial elections.
Additionally, 64,251 voters must renew their credentials before the end of the year. Norberto Moreno García, executive director of INE’s 03 District Executive Board in Quintana Roo, explained that Mexican law mandates voter IDs expire after ten years.
Required Documents for Renewal
Moreno García advised citizens to visit INE offices with the following documents:
- Original birth certificate
- Proof of address no older than three months
- Expired voter ID
He added, “They may also present other forms of identification, such as a driver’s license, professional license, or military service card, to request a renewal.”
Fast Processing Time
The renewal process takes less than ten minutes, according to Moreno García, who encouraged residents to complete the procedure promptly. However, he noted that INE offices also handle other services, such as address updates, leading to consistent foot traffic.
The INE emphasized the importance of keeping voter registrations current to ensure participation in future elections.
