Akumal, Quintana Roo — Two British tourists were assisted by officers from the Policía Ejecutiva after their belongings were stolen while they were visiting Akumal Beach. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon and, although no violence was reported, it caused concern among the visitors.

Details of the Incident

The victims, identified as Miguel Angelo Botelho de Sa, 39, and George David Keith Hilliard, 35, brothers from London, stated that they had left their backpacks on a frequently used pathway while they enjoyed the ocean. According to their account, the backpacks contained personal items, documents, and valuables.

Initially, their mother had offered to watch the belongings but momentarily stepped away. When the tourists returned, their items were missing, prompting them to seek help from authorities. Officers from the Policía Ejecutiva arrived at the scene to document the case and provide support.

Police Response and Investigation

The brothers were escorted to the offices of the Fiscalía General del Estado (State Attorney General’s Office), where they filed an official complaint. After completing the necessary procedures, the tourists were taken to a bus stop for transportation to Playa del Carmen.

Authorities classified the incident as a non-violent theft, attributing it to the victims’ oversight in leaving their belongings unattended in a public area. The case was resolved without further complications, and the tourists expressed gratitude for the prompt and professional assistance from law enforcement.

Increased Security Measures

Local officials assured that preventive patrols will be reinforced in the municipality’s beaches to deter opportunistic crimes and enhance safety for visitors.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about theft targeting tourists in Quintana Roo, prompting calls for heightened vigilance and security measures in popular destinations.
