Cancún, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa of Quintana Roo and Canadian Ambassador to Mexico Cameron MacKay led a high-level meeting aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation in tourism, economic development, and security. The discussions solidified Quintana Roo’s position as a reliable and strategic destination for Canadian visitors while fostering investment opportunities and collaborative safety measures.
Strengthening Tourism and Economic Partnerships
Governor Lezama emphasized Canada’s significance as Quintana Roo’s second-largest tourism market during the meeting, which included Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra. Official data revealed that 242,789 Canadian tourists arrived in the state in March 2025, accounting for 15.6% of total international visitors. In the first quarter of the year, Quintana Roo welcomed 712,123 Canadian travelers, underscoring the region’s enduring appeal.
Economic Development Secretary Paul Carrillo de Cáceres highlighted opportunities for Canadian investment in key sectors such as manufacturing, clean energy, and agribusiness. “We are excited by the growing interest of Canadian companies in investing in Quintana Roo. Today, we are fertile ground for responsible investment,” he stated.
Reinforcing Safety and Diplomatic Ties
Ambassador MacKay’s visit reaffirmed the strong diplomatic relationship between Canada and Quintana Roo, with a focus on enhancing safety protocols for tourists and residents alike. Governor Lezama welcomed the ambassador, stating, “Ambassador, it is an honor to welcome you to Quintana Roo, a state that shares a close, strong, and constantly growing relationship with Canada.”
The meeting was attended by key officials from Quintana Roo, including the Governor’s private secretary, Ángel Rivero Palomo; Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Óscar Rébora Aguilera; and Undersecretary of the C4 and C5 centers, Marco Antonio Zamora Cázares. Representing Canada were Catherine Genois, Consul in Mexico City; Alie Bourgeois, Consular Agent in Cancún; León Lajeunesse, Consular Agent in Playa del Carmen; and Roberto Guerrero, Security Program Officer at the Canadian Embassy.
The discussions concluded with a shared commitment to deepening collaboration across tourism, investment, and security initiatives, further cementing the strategic alliance between Quintana Roo and Canada.
