Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities have detained Jorge Alberto 'N' on charges of attempted femicide following an acid attack on a woman in Cancún. The incident occurred Wednesday morning, June 11, on Avenida Tulum, prompting an immediate investigation by the Quintana Roo Attorney General's Office (FGE).
Victim Targeted After Repeated Harassment
According to preliminary reports, the suspect had allegedly stalked the victim for several days prior to the attack. Witnesses stated that Jorge Alberto 'N' followed the woman as she exited a public transport van, then verbally assaulted her before throwing acid directly at her face, particularly targeting her eyes.
Emergency responders treated the victim at the scene, and she remains hospitalized under observation. Authorities confirmed her condition is stable, with no imminent risk to her life.
Swift Arrest and Official Condemnation
Investigative police officers apprehended the suspect at the intersection of Avenidas Kabah and Niños Héroes. He was later handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office, which will determine his legal status in the coming hours.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa condemned the attack as a "cruel and cowardly act," vowing that it would not go unpunished.
"The perpetrator has been arrested. We will not tolerate acts of violence, especially against women," Lezama stated. She urged the FGE to conduct a thorough and expedited investigation, emphasizing, "There is no place for machista violence here. In Quintana Roo, we protect the lives of all women."
In a post on social media platform X, the governor reiterated her stance:
"We strongly condemn the acid attack against a woman in Benito Juárez municipality. The perpetrator has been detained and will face the full weight of the law. In Quintana Roo, #LasMujeresNoSeRompen [Women Do Not Break]."
