Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — With active participation from chefs, business owners, academics, and representatives of industry chambers such as the Canirac, the Second Ordinary Session of the Municipal Gastronomic Committee took place, led by Municipal Tourism Secretary Estefanía Hernández.

The session, held in an atmosphere of dialogue and collaboration, saw Hernández present new proposals aimed at strengthening Playa del Carmen’s tourism appeal through gastronomy—an increasingly vital pillar for the municipality’s economic development.

“This committee is a space to build together. We want Playa del Carmen to continue falling in love with its cuisine, its roots, and its cultural diversity. These projects belong to everyone and are for everyone,” Hernández Flores stated while introducing the initiatives.

Key Proposals to Boost Gastronomic Tourism

Among the proposals, Hernández suggested integrating a gastronomic showcase during the Italian Cultural Festival La Divina Comedia, el Musical, scheduled for June 13 and 14 at the Teatro de la Ciudad. Restaurants such as Casa Sofía have already confirmed participation, with invitations remaining open for others interested in contributing to the event.

Additionally, she introduced the Playenses Choice distinction, an award based on community input. The recognition stems from a 2024 survey in which over 570 residents voted for their favorite dining spots across 18 categories.

A third initiative involves creating a multicultural festival celebrating the cuisines of the more than 100 nationalities residing in Playa del Carmen. Proposed for July 28 as part of the municipality’s anniversary celebrations, the event would feature a culinary showcase, a flag parade along Quinta Avenida, and activities engaging foreign communities, consulates, social groups, and local influencers.

Other planned events include the Playa Grill Fest and Opera Maya, designed not only to boost tourism but also to foster community pride and unity.

Strengthening Playa del Carmen’s Culinary Identity

Backed by the restaurant sector and the leadership of the 2024–2027 municipal administration under Mayor Estefanía Mercado, the Gastronomic Committee is advancing toward a shared vision: positioning Playa del Carmen as a destination where cuisine bridges cultures, drives the economy, and becomes a source of collective pride.

Also in attendance were Antón Bojórquez Mackay, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, and Saúl Barbosa Heredia, Council President of the Industry, Commerce, and Agricultural Affairs Commission, alongside other special guests.
