Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatán Governor Joaquín “Huacho” Díaz Mena has inaugurated the State Committee for Sexual Diversity, a landmark initiative aimed at addressing historical inequalities faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The committee will serve as a platform for dialogue, policy development, and institutional coordination to advance inclusivity across the state.

A Commitment to Constitutional Rights

Speaking from the central courtyard of the Government Palace, Díaz Mena emphasized that the committee is not merely symbolic but will actively influence governance. “We will not rest until every program, every policy, and every institution recognizes and respects diversity as fundamental to our identity as Yucatecos,” he declared.

The governor stressed that defending LGBTQ+ rights is not a trend or ideological stance but a constitutional obligation. “This government is convinced that all people deserve to live without fear, with dignity, in freedom, and with equal opportunities,” he added.

A Historic Step Toward Inclusion

The committee will collaborate with civil society organizations, activists, youth groups, and Indigenous Maya communities to implement inclusive policies. “To those who have courageously upheld the banner of diversity and human dignity, we say: this Government of the Maya Renaissance sees you, hears you, and walks with you,” Díaz Mena stated.

Michelle Kuuk Poot, an advocate for diversity and inclusion from Teabo and Chumayel, hailed the move as historic. “Today begins the construction of public policies that include, listen to, and respect us. Never again will policies be made without us—we have the right to be here not just as survivors but as protagonists of our destiny,” she said.

Institutional Support and Symbolic Gestures

Alan Padrón Albornoz, Secretary of Youth, noted that the committee reflects the transformative spirit of the Fourth Transformation and the Maya Renaissance, grounded in social justice. He confirmed that the body will represent over 15,000 LGBTQ+ individuals in Yucatán and work toward a discrimination-free state.

“This is the first time the state government has opened the Government Palace to the LGBTQ+ community and allocated a budget for policies supporting this cause,” Padrón Albornoz remarked.

To conclude the event, the Government Palace façade was illuminated in the colors of the Pride flag, symbolizing Yucatán’s progress toward justice and equality for all.

The establishment of the committee marks a pivotal moment in Yucatán’s efforts to foster inclusivity and uphold human rights.
