Mexico City, Mexico — Isaac del Toro has already made history at the Giro d’Italia, but his focus remains fixed on the ultimate goal: winning the competition. After securing second place in Stage 19 and retaining the maglia rosa, the cyclist expressed his astonishment at representing Mexico on the global stage, acknowledging the overwhelming support from his compatriots.
A Nation’s Pride
“I still can’t believe it. Everyone in my country is starting to pay attention to this sport—cycling. We’re making progress step by step, but I truly can’t believe I’m the one representing an entire nation,” Del Toro said.
The Ensenada, Baja California native added that he takes pride in how he is representing Mexico. “We’re one step away from Rome, but I keep reminding myself that my chances remain the same as they were at the start of this Giro. I just need to eat well, and tomorrow we’ll go out and try again,” he stated.
A Duel for the Ages
Del Toro faced a fierce one-on-one battle with Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz, his primary rival for the overall lead. “When he attacked, I was able to stay with him. We were both also playing it safe, trying to avoid crashes and unnecessary risks,” he explained.
He also praised his team’s efforts, emphasizing their control of the race and protection of his lead. “My team was there the whole time—they’re incredible. We’re down two riders, but we’re still very strong. They motivate me and give me so much confidence. Giving my all is the least I can do in return. It’s an overwhelming feeling,” Del Toro said.
Confidence and Caution
“As a team, we always try to stay in contention. It’s been amazing so far, and we’re keeping our confidence high. I still can’t believe what’s happening, but the emotions I’m feeling right now are immense. At this point, I can’t afford to take too many risks,” he concluded.
