Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A woman identified as María José "N," alias "Lorena," was arrested during a surveillance operation in Playa del Carmen. Authorities allege she is a high-priority target in the state's criminal atlas and is suspected of being linked to a cell of the "Los Chapitos" criminal organization.
The arrest followed a joint operation between the Secretary of Citizen Security and the Mexican Navy along Avenida Prolongación Juárez in the Ejidal neighborhood.
Details of the Arrest
The operation began when officers observed a red Mitsubishi Mirage abruptly stop. Two men exited the vehicle—one carrying a long firearm against his chest and the other holding a square package wrapped in brown tape at waist height. After closing the car doors, both fled on foot into a brush-covered area, leaving the vehicle running with the woman inside.
Upon inspecting the car, officers found the suspect, who did not attempt to escape. A search yielded 38 small ziplock bags containing a dry herb resembling marijuana, 20 bags with white solid fragments believed to be crystal meth, and three notebooks—one hardcover and two softcover—containing financial records allegedly tied to illicit activities.
Authorities also seized a black backpack, a lime-green Samsung phone, and a pink iPhone as evidence. The vehicle, registered with Quintana Roo license plates, was impounded.
Legal Proceedings
The detained woman was transferred to the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Drug-Related Crimes, where her legal status will be determined. Investigators are examining her potential role in a "Los Chapitos" operational cell involved in drug distribution in Playa del Carmen.
The case remains under investigation.
