Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The civil association Rescatan-Do has warned that the transient population in Playa del Carmen is a leading cause of pet abandonment, as many individuals returning to their places of origin do not take their dogs with them.

Lack of Animal Welfare Culture Exacerbates Issue

During a press conference detailing an event marking the association’s second anniversary, Doheny Uruzquieta, president of Rescatan-Do, stated that a lack of awareness regarding animal welfare leads many to abandon pets on the streets.

“The number of abandoned and mistreated animals in Playa del Carmen—and the region as a whole—is staggering. We believe much of this stems from the floating population we have here. Many leave and rarely take their pets along,” Uruzquieta said.

High Abandonment Rates in Specific Neighborhoods

The association reported that the highest numbers of abandoned and abused animals have been found in neighborhoods such as In House, Villas del Sol, Luis Donaldo Colosio, and Cristo Rey. The most common health issues among rescued dogs are tick-borne diseases, which are prevalent in the area.

Strengthening Adoption Protocols

Uruzquieta emphasized the importance of stricter adoption protocols to ensure pets are placed in responsible homes.

“This is critically important. It’s not just about giving animals away to make people feel good—it’s about ensuring these dogs become part of a family,” she explained.

Efforts to Provide Affordable Veterinary Care

The association is also working to establish partnerships with veterinary clinics to offer low-cost medications, both for rescuers and the general public who lack the financial means to afford them.
