Cozumel, Quintana Roo — In a profound display of symbolism, culture, and spirituality, the 17th edition of the Sacred Mayan Journey took place at Chankanaab Natural Park. The event, organized by the Foundation for Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC), saw 360 participants traverse over 33 kilometers from Xcaret to the sacred island of Cozumel, reenacting the ancient pilgrimage ritual to the sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel.
A Ceremonial Revival
The arrival of the canoeists was met with applause, ceremonial dances, and a Mayan ritual that revitalized attendees with the power of ancestral spirit. Central to the event was the "Call of Ixchel, Oracle 2025," a poignant theatrical performance featuring the characters of the wise elder Beliax and the young Ixchel. Through them, the sacred message of the goddess was delivered: "Take pride in your community and protect my temple."
This tradition, carried out in collaboration with Grupo Experiencias Xcaret, aligns with the vision of Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, who promotes cultural tourism with identity and respect as part of the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo. The initiative seeks to strengthen social unity and highlight the heritage of indigenous communities.
A Living Legacy
Juanita Alonso Marrufo, Director General of FPMC, emphasized the cultural significance of the journey, stating, "Traditions are the living soul of our people. With every stroke of the paddle, we honor memory, strengthen the present, and build a future with identity."
Following divine blessings, the canoeists began their return to Polé (Xcaret), carrying prayers for health, prosperity, and well-being. The community bid them farewell amid music, dances, and shared emotions, reaffirming that faith, culture, and identity endure in the spirit of the Mayan Caribbean.
The event underscores FPMC's dedication to preserving Mayan traditions, fostering pride in ancestral roots, and ensuring the voice of the ancient soul remains alive.
