Playa del Carmen, Mexico — In a concerted effort to promote a culture of peace, prevent violence, and strengthen safe environments for children and families, the federal government, the State of Quintana Roo, and the Playa del Carmen Municipal Government, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, will organize the 2025 Peace and Voluntary Disarmament Fair under the slogan “Yes to disarmament, yes to peace.”
Initiative Details
The event encourages public participation in activities aimed at fostering security and peace education. Children and adolescents will have the opportunity to exchange war-themed toys for educational toys that promote creativity and social harmony. Adults, meanwhile, can voluntarily surrender firearms, ammunition, or explosives anonymously and safely, receiving financial compensation without legal repercussions.
The fair will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- May 12: Chedraui Villas del Sol
- May 13: GEAVIG facilities, Avenida Chit at Avenida Gansos, Pescadores neighborhood
- May 14: Lázaro Cárdenas Park, Colosio neighborhood
- May 15: Cristo Rey community
- May 16: Lázaro Cárdenas Park, Colosio neighborhood
Collaborative Effort
The initiative is a joint effort between the Executive Secretariat of the State System of Public Security, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the State Center for Crime Prevention and Citizen Participation, and the Playa del Carmen Municipal Secretariat of Public Security. The program underscores a shared commitment to creating safer, more peaceful communities free from weapons.
