Alleged Extortionist Held in Isla Mujeres Over “Passage” Fees

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A man identified as Jorge Alberto "N" has been detained and formally charged with extortion after allegedly demanding weekly payments of $450 under threats of violence while posing as a member of a criminal organization. A judge has ordered two years of preventive detention pending trial.

Arrest Follows Joint Operation

The arrest was conducted by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes and the Centurión Group after a victim, whose identity remains protected, filed a formal complaint. According to authorities, Jorge Alberto "N" arrived at a business in Costa Mujeres accompanied by two armed men, identified himself as part of a criminal group, and threatened to kill the owner if the demanded payment was not made.

The operation took place at a commercial establishment on Avenida José López Portillo, Supermanzana 64, in the municipality of Benito Juárez. The suspect was apprehended in the act while attempting to collect the money. Authorities seized a handgun, two rifle magazines for military-exclusive use, small bags of marijuana, and an envelope containing $450 in cash.

Judicial Proceedings

During the court hearing, prosecutors presented sufficient evidence for the judge to order Jorge Alberto "N" to stand trial. The court imposed preventive detention for two years or the duration of the judicial process, whichever is longer.

The case follows other recent criminal incidents in Quintana Roo, including:

  • The arrest of Emiliano Espartaco "N" for extortion in Playa del Carmen.
  • Three men detained in Tulum with over 60 bags of illicit substances.
  • Spanish tourists accusing Tulum police of extortion and robbery.

Authorities continue to investigate organized crime activities in the region.
