Mérida, Yucatán — With the arrival of the rainy season, reports of bites from the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles) have begun to surface, prompting health officials to urge caution. The spiders, though present year-round, become more active between May and June, increasing the risk of encounters.

Heightened Risk During Rainy Season

Brown recluse spiders typically hide in dark corners, wall cracks, or behind furniture, emerging primarily at night, which makes them difficult to identify. They are characterized by their small size, thin legs, six eyes, and a distinctive reddish mark on their front section.

Prevention and Treatment Recommendations

Health specialists advise residents to maintain clean living spaces, avoid debris accumulation, and inspect clothing and shoes before use. If bitten, individuals should immediately wash the affected area with soap and water—avoiding creams or ointments—and seek medical attention to receive the appropriate antivenom.

Authorities emphasize the importance of prompt treatment, as delayed care can lead to severe complications. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report sightings to local health departments.
