Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A total of 120 actors are set to participate in the Living Stations of the Cross in Playa del Carmen, a dramatic reenactment scheduled to begin shortly after noon on Good Friday at Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Park in the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta neighborhood.

A Solemn Reenactment of Christ’s Passion

The event, organized by members of the Nuestra Señora del Carmen parish, will commence at 1:00 p.m. with the portrayal of Jesus’ trial before Roman authorities and the accusations brought by Jewish leaders, as recounted in the Gospels. This reenactment holds deep significance for the Catholic faith, marking one of the most solemn observances of Holy Week.

Father Enrique Flores, the lead priest of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, explained the practical approach taken in the production. “We do it in a very practical way, where the same young people who participate also take on roles like those who whip Christ,” he said. “This year, we’ll have a drone. I believe it will be better than last year because there has been more promotion.”

Route and Crucifixion Scene

The procession is expected to proceed along Avenida 30 to Juárez Avenue in the downtown area, continuing toward the dunes of Fundadores Park, where the crucifixion will be staged around 3:00 p.m.

Local authorities in Playa del Carmen will provide security along the approximately three-kilometer route to prevent incidents, such as fainting due to high temperatures.

Spiritual Significance

Father Flores emphasized the spiritual importance of Holy Week. “This Holy Week holds such profound value for each of us because it draws us into the heart of Jesus Christ and the understanding of why we observe Holy Week or Semana Mayor,” he said. “For us as Catholics, Christians, or believers, it truly gives us strength in the face of life’s difficulties.”

Additional Observances Across the City

Similar Stations of the Cross processions will take place in various neighborhoods and subdivisions throughout Playa del Carmen on Good Friday.
