Greenpeace Greenlights Restoration Plan for Mayan Train Route

Greenpeace, the global environmental organization, has given its approval to a comprehensive restoration plan. This plan, proposed by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), is aimed at areas affected by the construction of the Mayan Train in the Yucatan Peninsula.

However, Greenpeace stresses the importance of engaging local communities, citizens, and experts in this process. This inclusion is essential to ensure that the proposed solutions are both effective and sustainable.

In a statement, Greenpeace underscored the significance of Semarnat's plan to protect the cenotes and cavern systems in Quintana Roo. The organization also appealed to authorities to ensure that the plan includes a reduction in the intensive use of agrochemicals in Campeche's industrial monocultures. Moreover, it should address the issue of waste produced by large-scale pig farms in Yucatan.

Greenpeace commended the removal of meshes along routes and the enhancement of wildlife crossings. However, the organization expressed concerns about the specific measures that will be put in place to ensure the survival and reproduction of endangered species, such as the jaguar. The organization reiterated the need to establish biological corridors, as suggested by experts.
