The Solidaridad municipal government currently has no plans to lower ferry fares for Playa del Carmen residents traveling to Cozumel. City mayor, Estefanía Mercado Asencio, stated that there are no discussions underway with shipping companies to offer residents a discount, a practice undertaken by the previous administration.
Despite a recent hike in ticket prices for the ferry route from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, the mayor has announced a potential twinning initiative between the two cities. This plan aims to eventually reduce maritime travel costs. A meeting with the mayor of Cozumel is anticipated to further support residents of both cities who frequently travel between them for work or personal reasons.
The historical connection between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel is significant, with collaboration between the two communities essential in various sectors. Numerous Playa del Carmen residents commute to Cozumel daily for administrative tasks or business-related activities, reinforcing the close relationship between the two locations.
