Cancun, Quintana Roo — In a festive ceremony overlooking the Caribbean Sea, 357 couples were married during the 2026 mass wedding event held on Playa Delfines in Cancun.
The ceremony was witnessed by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, the honorary president of the state DIF family services agency, Verónica Lezama Espinosa, and Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta. The official proceedings were led by civil registry officer Mirley Castillo Pacheco.
Inclusion and Diversity at Cancun Mass Wedding
This year’s event included 14 same-sex couples and one couple with hearing disabilities, reflecting the inclusive nature of the ceremony.
In her remarks, Governor Lezama said marriage involves building as a team and facing difficult moments together. She recalled that when she was mayor of Benito Juárez municipality, she decided to hold the mass weddings on the beach as a symbol that beaches are public spaces open to everyone.
Notable Stories from the Ceremony
Among the most emotional stories was that of Óscar Javier Rovelo Ruiz, 78, and Degia Herrera Caballero, 77, who after 56 years together decided to formalize their union legally.
Also notable was the participation of Jorge Montiel Orduña, 67, and María Elena Pérez Rosales, 47, who were the first couple registered in this year’s event.
The 357 couples formalized their relationships and, in many cases, provided legal certainty for their children.
Officials Emphasize Legal Certainty and Family Strengthening
The honorary president of the state DIF agency emphasized that each story demonstrates that marriage doesn’t imply perfection, but rather the daily decision to support each other with respect and patience.
Mayor Ana Paty Peralta stressed that civil marriage represents the legal formalization of life as a couple and provides security in family and property matters.
The mass weddings are part of an institutional strategy to facilitate access to civil marriage and strengthen legal certainty for families in the state.
Music and Symbolism by the Caribbean
The ceremony was accompanied by the orchestra of the Citizen Security Department, which provided music for the large-scale event framed by the Playa Delfines landscape.
The proceedings concluded with the songs “Eres” and “Vive” by José María Napoleón, marking the emotional close of the day.
