Cancún, Quintana Roo — A total of 272 OXXO convenience stores in Cancún will join the city’s Puntos Morados (Purple Points) network under a collaboration agreement signed by the Benito Juárez municipal government and the retail chain.

The measure expands the number of places where women, girls, boys and adolescents in risky situations can ask for help, receive temporary shelter and be referred to the appropriate authorities.

Mayor Ana Paty Peralta signed the agreement and said employees at participating stores will be trained to identify risk situations and activate the Puntos Morados protocol.

What a Punto Morado Can Do

Under the agreement, store workers will receive training on the support protocol. When someone needs help, staff can activate the mechanism and request assistance from the authorities. The stores will also be able to serve as temporary safe spaces while help arrives.

The goal is for the stores to act as a first point of aid for people who need protection and support.

Security and Specialized Services to Follow Up

Reports generated through the mechanism will be handled by several municipal departments: the Municipal Public Security and Traffic Department (SMSCyT), the Municipal Institute for Women (IMM) and the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG).

Those agencies will follow up on cases and refer them, when necessary, to the appropriate support services.

Network Expands to Commercial Establishments

With the 272 stores, the municipality adds a large retail footprint spread across Cancún to its strategy for preventing and responding to violence.

Those taking part in the signing included Jaime Padilla Barrientos, head of the SMSCyT; Miroslava Reguera Martínez, general director of the IMM; David Alejandro Alonzo Monforte, manager of OXXO’s Plaza Cancún operation; and Víctor Hugo Quiñonez Cruz, asset protection manager for the central-south zone.

The strategy includes staff training and coordination with authorities so the stores can act as support points in situations that require intervention.
