Quintana Roo Aims for 2026 World Cup Team Base

Cancún — Governor Mara Lezama has stated that hotels in Quintana Roo could serve as the base camp for a national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. She also indicated that the state is poised to be a destination for tourists who will take advantage of the direct air connectivity offered by Cancún International Airport.

“We are working with the federal government; we have some proposals that we have been working on for several months. Some hotels were registered to be a base camp for a team, and we are on it,” said Lezama.

Following coordinated tours with the federal Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and representatives from FIFA, the airport will be key to making the state one of the main entry points to Mexico for the World Cup.

“We have already done tours with FIFA, with the Ministry of Tourism. This depends directly on FIFA, but we know and are very clear that the Cancún International Airport will be one of the main access points for the delegations, but also for the tourists,” Lezama stated.

She added that “we have advanced tremendously in transversal coordination so that Quintana Roo can be a place from where they can easily travel to the host cities of the matches, without forgetting that from Cancún there is direct connectivity to most of them.”

Furthermore, she confirmed that they have moved ahead to make proposals to FIFA so that the destinations of the Mexican Caribbean are taken into account. “The objective is to anticipate, present proposals, and ensure that those who come have a great experience in Quintana Roo,” mentioned Lezama.

Several hotels in Cancún and Quintana Roo are considering building soccer fields ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goal is to capture the revenue from hosting a team, along with all its support staff and family members. Additionally, they would gain visibility and could continue to offer this service in the future to Mexican teams.
