Cancún, Mexico — The tranquility of Playa Tortugas was shattered by the news of a tragedy that has shocked Cancún: a 19-year-old woman drowned after entering the sea in the early morning hours.
According to preliminary information, the young woman went to the beach accompanied by family members and friends, with whom she was socializing during the night. In a moment of inattention, she decided to go into the water but never managed to return to shore.
The desperation of those who were with her grew as the minutes passed with no sign of her. It was not until the first hours of the morning that the situation became untenable and a call for help was made to emergency numbers.
Elements of the Tourist Police responded to the call and, together with personnel from Civil Protection, organized a search that ended with the discovery of her body floating approximately 15 meters from the coast.
The body was recovered and transferred to the Medical Forensic Service (Semefo), where the corresponding studies will be performed. The identity of the victim has not been publicly confirmed, pending official identification by her family.
The lamentable incident in which a young woman died at Playa Tortugas highlights the risks of entering the sea during hours without surveillance and serves as a reminder of the need to exercise extreme caution to prevent new tragedies from bereaving families in Cancún.
